Buying a designer vase: how to find the right one
1. Shapes, colours and sizes
2. Suitable materials
3. Matching design styles
4. Cohesive flower arrangements
5. Caring for flowers and vases
1. Shapes, colours and sizes: which vase for which flowers?
A vase should show off the flowers – without stealing the show. That's why the length, shape and colour of the flowers should always suit the vase. At Connox, you'll find a suitable designer vase for every kind of flower.

1. Roses and round blooms: Roses need a lot of water, so they are best placed in bulbous decorative vases that hold plenty of it. Round, full flower heads such as hydrangeas and peonies also look their best in these vases.
2. Long-stemmed flowers: Arrange flowers with long stems, such as tulips, in tall vases with a slightly narrower opening. The vase holds the bouquet together so the flowers don't fall apart. Make sure the opening isn't too narrow, though – otherwise the arrangement can quickly look stiff.
3. Lush bouquets: For voluminous bouquets of all kinds, choose a large cylindrical vase with a wide opening – this gives the bouquet room to unfold in all its glory.
4. & 5. Single flowers: Even on their own, flowers make quite an impression – especially in modern multi-stem bud vases that show off several blooms individually. Find out here how ikebana – the traditional Japanese art of arranging carefully chosen flowers – works. Single flowers also look classic in slim bottle vases.
6. Branches, sunflowers and more: Long-stemmed flowers such as sunflowers, hyacinths, palm leaves or branches work well in floor vases. Often a single flower or branch is enough – placed at an angle in the vase. But whole bouquets of long-stemmed flowers also look lovely in floor vases made of glass, porcelain or ceramic.

As a general rule: The vase should reach no more than two thirds of the height of the flowers. That's why it's worth having two or three different vases at home, so you can show off every bouquet at its best. When it comes to colour, the options are almost endless. Whether you go for a subtle white or black vase, an eye-catching colourful one or a modern metallic piece is entirely up to you. Our shop has something for every taste.
2. Materials: which material works best?
If you mainly want to show off the blooms, opaque designer vases made of ceramic or porcelain are a good choice, as they hide the stems and leaves.
With their striking shapes, colours and patterns, porcelain and ceramic vases are often an eye-catcher in their own right, like the vases by HAY, and look very decorative as floor vases even without fresh flowers. Here you'll find everything you need to know about creative vase decoration without cut flowers.
Ceramic vases have a more rustic, natural look, whereas porcelain designs, such as the popular vases by Lyngby Porcelæn, are above all delicate. A glass vase looks elegant and understated.

Glass vases give a full view of the flowers and put the focus on the bouquet. Even so, their tints and shapes can add interesting accents to your interior. By the way, you'll also find some particularly beautiful glass vases in our collection.

"Vases that combine different materials but have a simple shape don't just look impressive with a bouquet – they also work very well on their own as a statement piece. Pairing a fine, light material such as glass with a heavy, robust one such as wood or concrete creates an interesting contrast that suits almost any interior." – Viktoria, interior expert
3. Design styles: which vase suits my home?
It's not just the flowers that should complement the vase – the vase should also fit in well with your interior. The easiest way to achieve this is to choose a vase that matches the style of your home.

Simple and Scandinavian, romantic and playful or clean-lined and modern – renowned manufacturers such as Iittala and Kähler Design create vases in a wide range of styles, many of them true sculptures.
If you don't want to commit to one style, choose understated, timeless design classics such as the Aalto vase.

When choosing a vase, also think about the colour combination. Colourful printed designs stand out particularly well in simple surroundings and against white walls.
If your interior is more playful and colourful, opt for simpler designer vases – combined with colourful flowers, the room can otherwise quickly look cluttered and the flowers get lost. Pick up colour accents from other home accessories or choose minimalist glass vases for a particularly cohesive look.
4. Vase decoration: how do I arrange flowers and vases?
Combining flowers is easiest if you limit your selection either to two or three types of flower or to two or three shades . Bouquets look beautifully natural when they are arranged loosely and casually. To do this, place the flowers in the vase at an angle, crossing over each other – this way they fall loosely without losing their hold.

Divide a bouquet between several small, slim bottle vases and group them together – this looks particularly modern.
In general, vases of different sizes and shapes from the same colour family always catch the eye. Transparent glass vases in different designs also look even more decorative in a group. Choose an odd number of vases – this makes everything look balanced.
5. Caring for flowers and vases: tips for flower care and cleaning vases
Before you put flowers in your vase, it should be completely clean. How much water you add depends on the needs of the type of flower. Often the vase should be no more than half full, and large vases only a third full.
Make sure that only the stems are in the water and that no leaves hang into it. Ideally, change the water every day or at least every other day.

Vases should always be clean and free of limescale. In most cases, a washing-up sponge, lukewarm water and mild washing-up liquid are enough to clean a vase. You can remove stubborn limescale with white vinegar and a little lemon juice. Warm water and a denture-cleaning tablet left overnight also work wonders.
