Finnish fashion designer
Vuokko Hillevi Lilian Eskolin-Nurmesniemi is a well-known fashion designer from Finland who had a major influence on fashion in the 1960s and 1970s. She studied at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland, and joined Marimekko in 1953, where she created revolutionary designs together with Maija Isola. The two were instrumental in Marimekko's success and made the company popular. Vuokko achieved her breakthrough with the Jokapoika shirt – a red shirt with vertical white stripes. This pattern went on to appear in many of her designs and remains very popular on countless textiles today. Simple shapes and straight-lined patterns have always defined her designs and embodied the minimalist Scandinavian style.
Her achievements include the Lunning Prize in 1964 and the Kaj Franck Design Prize in 1997.
