design The Aslak Artek Chair impresses with its elegant, versatile design, making it equally at home in public spaces such as hotels or restaurants as it is in the comfort of one’s own home. With its short, rounded armrests, it fits easily next to a desk or dining table. The seat and backrest are pleasantly curved, allowing for hours of comfortable sitting. Designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara as early as 1946, the Aslak chair wasn’t manufactured until 1958, when technological advances made mass production possible. As a pioneer of modern Finnish design, Tapiovaara sought to combine sculptural form with economical use of materials—a goal that the Aslak chair fulfills perfectly. The Aslak chair is made of molded oak veneer, while the legs and frame are made of solid beech.
