Robert Doisneau, Paris

Capturing human life in all its facets

*Robert Doisneau Paris* is a comprehensive monograph that sheds light on the extraordinary body of work by arguably France’s most beloved photographer. Under the direction of Jean Claude Gautrand, a close friend of Doisneau’s, and with access to his extensive archive, the work of this master of portrait photography is impressively presented. Doisneau is known for his iconic photographs of Paris, in which he captures human life in all its facets—from everyday joys to people’s worries. Through his empathetic lens, he captured the beauty of the ordinary, discovering humor, affection, and emotion in seemingly insignificant moments, and thus created a tender perspective on humanity. This monograph showcases not only his most famous works but also lesser-known photographs that portray “ordinary people in ordinary situations.” Through accompanying quotes and narratives, a lively dialogue emerges between the viewer, the images, and the photographer himself. The volume conveys Doisneau’s unique sense of humor and his deep sensitivity to life in the City of Love.
