Vitra Home Complements

American designer George Nelson is considered—alongside figures such as Charles and Ray Eames and Alexander Girard—one of the defining figures of postwar American design. This is reason enough to reissue some of this influential designer’s creations as part of the “ Vitra ” Home Complements collection. All designs are produced according to the original blueprints and materials. For several years, Nelson shaped the corporate image of the American furniture manufacturer Herman Miller as its creative director. At the same time, he designed his own table and wall clocks for the company’s in-house division, the Howard Miller Clock Company.

Over the years, Nelson’s clocks became increasingly whimsical. In his clock designs, the designer almost universally avoided using numeric dials. This was because he was convinced that, when reading the time, the viewer pays less attention to the numbers and more to the position of the hands.
