Felt rugs: texture and atmosphere for your home

A felt rug brings a warm, comfortable feel to any room. Whether you want to add colourful accents to the living room or create a soft place for your child to play, felt rugs are durable and add texture and character. Our online shop offers high-quality designs in a wide range of colours, shapes and sizes. Find inspiration for your home.

Choosing a felt rug: what to consider

1. What is a felt rug?
2. Shapes and sizes
3. Tips for living and dining rooms
4. Care
5. Price

1. What is a felt rug and where can you use one?

All the felt rugs in our shop are made from 100% pure new wool. This natural material can be used in any room. To make felt, the wool is cleaned and combed before the fibres are compacted through a process called fulling. The result is a soft felt with a slightly textured surface. It is elastic, durable, easy to care for and resistant to moisture. It can also withstand considerable wear and is highly flame-retardant.

Felt rugs absorb sound, making them suitable for laminate and parquet floors with limited impact sound insulation. Thanks to its insulating properties, a large round felt rug can provide a cosy play area for children. In the living room, it makes a decorative feature; in the hallway, a modern felt runner adds a distinctive touch.

2. Different shapes and sizes for different needs

Choose a design, shape and size to suit where you plan to use your felt rug. The round Bigdot rug by Hey Sign has an anti-slip backing and can help improve room acoustics. This makes it particularly suitable for offices, entrances and reception areas.

The colourful round Pinocchio rug by HAY adds a playful touch to a child's room and other spaces. The round Hardy felt rug by myfelt has a more understated look. Its pebble-like design makes it a distinctive addition to the living room, bedroom or hallway.

Lotte, another design by myfelt, is a colourful rectangular runner. Like every felt rug in our shop, it is a handmade piece made from pure wool.

3. Tips for living and dining rooms

For a large felt rug in the living or dining room, choose a size that leaves around one metre between the rug and each wall. This makes it easier to open and close doors and lets more of the floor remain visible. Small round felt rugs can sit beneath a stool or magazine rack. You will need a larger rug for a reading chair, depending on the size of the chair and the space around it. A rectangular runner or large round felt rug can work well, with the chair placed in the centre, for example. A round felt rug pairs well with a round designer coffee table for a balanced look. To create contrast, try a deliberate mix of shapes by placing rectangular furniture on a round rug, or vice versa.

When choosing a colour, such as for the Bigdot rug, consider your existing interior, including wall colours and accessories such as cushions and curtains. Blue works well with other colours, although some shades can feel cool. Red adds a rich touch, yellow reflects light and creates a striking accent against dark colours. Green has a calming effect, while violet brings a refined feel to the room.

4. How to care for your felt rug

Pure wool felt rugs are durable and resilient thanks to the natural oils in the wool, and are easy to care for. If the dirt is only on the surface, gently brush it away or vacuum the rug. Smaller felt rugs can be hand-washed to remove more stubborn dirt. Use a sponge with shampoo or a specialist cleaner. Once the rug has dried after rinsing, reshape it by hand or with a steam iron on a low steam setting. If in doubt, or if the stain is particularly difficult to remove, have the rug professionally dry-cleaned.

5. Price

Our shop offers felt rugs at different price points. myfelt, for example, offers affordable basics, including the Lotte rugs, as well as higher-priced designs such as the beautiful Hardy rugs. The company's felt rugs are handmade in Berlin in Germany from high-quality materials.

The Danish manufacturer HAY also offers the colourful Pinocchio rug series at accessible prices. HAY has been creating contemporary designs since 2003 and offers a wide range of products.

The Bigdot rug by Hey Sign is in the mid-range. The manufacturer also produces its felt products by hand in Germany. Made from pure new wool, they are certified by The Woolmark Company.
