Plates – more than just a means to an end

You don't just need plates for special occasions. During the week, things sometimes have to be quick, and plates simply serve to get food on the table. When friends and family visit, you'll want to present the food nicely on the plate – and that's when you'll be glad to reach for designer plates that suit your interior style perfectly.

Plates as a matching dinner set

Want to serve several courses? With the right dinner set, that's easy too. A deep plate for soup, a small plate for the starter, a large plate for the main course and a small dessert plate – and your culinary highlight is set off perfectly.

Plates in different materials

Ceramic

Ceramic plates are very robust and suitable for everyday use in the kitchen. They are made largely of coarse clay and fired at high temperatures. Ceramic looks pure white in all lighting conditions.

Porcelain

Unlike ceramic, porcelain is very delicate and can break more easily, so handle it with a little more care. When light falls on porcelain, it reflects, creating different shades that make the plate look interesting. Porcelain plates are made from white kaolin clay, which hardens at 1,300 °C.

Earthenware

Earthenware plates are individual and usually one of a kind. They are handmade and hand-painted. Their coarse texture makes them look antique and rustic, yet modern at the same time. Take a little care when setting the plates down: earthenware is somewhat sensitive to knocks and can break more easily. Earthenware plates are made from feldspar, quartz or clay.

Glass

Glass plates are extremely robust. They are usually made of quartz sand, water and lime, which form the basis for transparent as well as colourful tableware. Don't be fooled – glass doesn't always have to be transparent. Thanks to their hard surface, glass plates have a long lifespan.

Wood

Pizza and snacks are often served on rustic wooden boards. They are very robust and won't break. Wash wooden plates by hand, as the beautiful texture will be damaged in the dishwasher.
