Kitchen textiles – a homely atmosphere in your cooking and dining area
You can't do without them: tea towels, aprons and the like are small helpers that simply belong in every kitchen. They help keep your kitchen clean and protect your hands from heat. As well as being practical, kitchen textiles add a decorative touch. Colourful fabrics and world-famous patterns create a homely atmosphere, especially in kitchens with lots of flat surfaces and simple units. And the choice is wide. The following list will help you make the right decision.
Finding the perfect kitchen textiles – what to consider:
1. Style
2. Sets
3. Series
4. Material
5. Quality
6. Care and cleaning
7. Hanging
Style: which design do you like?
In the kitchen, it's all about good taste – in your meals and your accessories alike. Before choosing your kitchen textiles, ask yourself what style you want to create. In a colourful kitchen, simple accessories and utensils make a lovely contrast. In an otherwise simple, modern kitchen, colourful kitchen textiles can add interesting splashes of colour. With a design classic such as the Triangle pattern by Ferm Living, you can't go wrong with any kitchen style. It fits into different settings and adds accents without being overpowering.
Sets: create a cohesive overall look
Many textiles, such as tea towels, come in sets. The items in each pack are coordinated in colour and pattern, which saves you searching for pieces to match your existing textiles. Sets are often a good way to add variety to your kitchen decor. Manufacturers such as HAY show how it's done: one tea towel is plain, while the other takes centre stage with bright neon colours.
Series: add to your kitchen textiles
Furnishing your kitchen is a bit like preparing a multi-course meal: kitchen accessories should complement each other just like the dishes. Choosing items from a series gives your design a common thread. The Siena collection by Artek, for example, includes an oven glove, apron, pot holder and tea towel. With this simple series, you can add other matching accessories such as cushions, tablecloths, table runners or trays. The understated black and white pattern fits into almost any kitchen. Things get more floral – and above all more colourful – with Marimekko's world-famous Unikko pattern.
As well as the Unikko and Siena patterns, we offer many other series.
Material: cotton or linen?
What do you need your tea towel to do? Polish or dry your dishes? Linen towels make glasses and cutlery shine. Their smooth surface doesn't leave lint and easily removes limescale or grease residue. Cotton towels are absorbent and hard-wearing, making them ideal for drying plates and other dishes. In the catering trade, half-linen towels like those by Artek are used. There's no difference in price between linen and cotton versions.
Quality: what kitchen textiles should deliver
When buying oven gloves and pot holders, pay attention to quality. They mustn't be too thin, otherwise there's a risk of burns. Polyester fillings also provide reliable protection against burns. A more modern option is pot holders made of silicone, like those by Eva Solo. Silicone is extremely heat-resistant, so the pot holders won't melt or lose their shape. They're easy to clean and meet high standards of hygiene.
Care and cleaning: what to bear in mind
Tea towels, aprons and the like get dirty often and need washing just as often, so they should be able to cope with temperatures above 40 °C. To remove not only visible dirt but also microorganisms such as bacteria, a water temperature of 60 °C is needed. Because they're washed so often, it's important that kitchen textiles are hard-wearing. Experts recommend washing tea towels every three days to ensure good hygiene. You'll find detailed care and cleaning instructions for each of our products in the product details on the product pages.
Hanging: loops make drying and displaying easier
Where do you want to keep your kitchen textiles? Loops aren't essential if you store your textiles in a cupboard or hang them over a towel rail. It's a different story if you want to display them on hooks or rails. In that case, make sure the kitchen textile has a hanging loop when you buy it. This stops your tea towel or apron from slipping off the hook and ending up on the floor.
