Dining tables – the heart of your living space
The dining table is one of the most important and central places in your home. It's where the family comes together, shares meals and catches up on the latest news. Here's what to look for when buying a dining table.

- The right shape: round, square or oval?
- The ideal dining table size
- Finding the right material: wood, glass or stone?
1. The right shape: round, square or oval?
First of all, the shape of the dining table matters. Whether it should be round, oval or square depends not only on your personal taste but also on the size of your dining room or kitchen. Oval and round dining tables are particularly popular in spacious dining areas, as they can be placed in the centre of the room. Square and rectangular tables, on the other hand, can also be placed against a wall, so they fit into an open-plan kitchen or living room without taking up much space.
"A round dining table is a real highlight in any dining area – not only because it sits in the middle of the room and can be reached from all sides, but because every table decoration and every pendant light that completes the dining area emphasises its central position." – Viktoria, interior expert
2. The ideal dining table size
How many people fit around a dining table?
Size is one of the most important factors when choosing a dining table. The first question is how many people you want to seat. As a rule, a width of around 60 cm and a depth of 40 cm is enough for one person. This leaves enough space between neighbours and room for a full place setting of plates, glasses and cutlery. A table 180 cm long, for example, seats three people on each side. If you also use the ends, up to eight people can dine at a 180 cm table.

Extendable dining tables
Extendable dining tables are a practical solution, especially for smaller rooms. With extension leaves, you can create extra seats for unexpected guests in no time. Manufacturers such as Andersen Furniture, Carl Hansen and Bruunmunch offer stylish extendable tables in various sizes.
Dining table width and height
As a rule, allow a space of 60 cm (L) x 40 cm (D) per person at the table. If two people sit opposite each other, a rectangular or oval table should be at least 80 cm wide. If serving dishes or decorations also take up space in the middle of the table, a width of 90 to 100 cm is recommended. For both rectangular and round tables, consider the total width of the table including chairs to create a cohesive room layout. As a rule, add 50 cm per chair to the table width or diameter, plus an extra 30 cm for walking space.
Depending on the height of the people using it, a dining table should be between 72 and 78 cm high.

Arranging chairs around a dining table
How you arrange the chairs around a dining table depends on the type of base. If the legs are at the corners of the tabletop, you can place chairs along the full length of the table. Dining tables with inset legs set further under the tabletop, by contrast, offer plenty of space and legroom for people at the ends. With this type, however, bear in mind that the chairs on the long sides have to be arranged around the table legs.
"My tip is a dining table with a central base. Whatever its shape, it gives you flexibility in choosing chairs and arranging places." – Viktoria, interior expert

3. Dining tables in wood, glass or stone
Solid wood dining tables
Material is another key factor when choosing a dining table. Solid wood is a popular choice. A solid wood table is sturdy, has a rustic look and creates a cosy atmosphere in the dining room. Different treatments not only protect the wood but also give it a particular look: waxing and oiling make the wood appear slightly darker, soaping lightens it and lacquering creates a glossy finish. Oiled wooden tables should be re-treated regularly so they last a long time. Also bear in mind that the colour of the wood can change with age and exposure to sunlight.
Coated dining tables
As well as solid wood dining tables, coated tabletops are another option. They are much lighter, have a core of MDF or plywood and are finished with veneer, linoleum, laminate or lacquer, for example. This makes the surface particularly easy to care for, with no need for regular treatment. There's also a wide choice of colours and textures to suit your interior style. Artek, HAY, Muuto and Ferm Living offer a wide range of coated dining tables in various shapes and colours.

Dining tables in glass, metal or stone
Designer dining tables made of glass and metal have a cool, minimalist look that feels more elegant. The combination of the two materials in particular gives dining tables, such as those by ClassiCon, a modern look. When buying a glass tabletop, always make sure it's made of safety glass, which doesn't shatter into sharp shards if it breaks.
Dining tables with a natural stone or marble top are very much on trend. Their patterned surface looks particularly natural, and the material is resistant to heat and moisture. Brands such as Vitra and Kartell offer marble tables in both understated and more extravagant styles.
