Comfortable reading chairs for relaxing moments
Curling up in a reading chair with a good book and losing yourself in another world – there's hardly a better way to unwind after a stressful day. A comfortable armchair for reading is a truly special piece of seating that offers you real comfort. It adds visual appeal to your living room or brings a cosy atmosphere to your study or bedroom. It should be sturdy so you can enjoy it for a long time, and its upholstery should be robust and as easy to clean as possible. The Slow Chair & Ottoman by Vitra, for example, is extremely comfortable and easy to care for, and its extravagant style makes it a beautiful eye-catcher.
How do you find the right designer reading chair to suit your wishes and needs? What should you look for when buying, and how do you care for your new favourite piece? Below you'll find plenty of tips and advice.
The right reading chair – what to look for when buying:
1. Models
2. Design
3. Size
4. Material
5. Care
6. Accessories
7. Price
1. Different models: which designer reading chair suits you?
The designer armchairs in our shop are as varied as people's tastes. Wingback chairs with a high backrest and armrests offer an ideal sitting position and the comfort you need for reading. Matching stools and footrests add to the comfort. The Tired Man by by Lassen is one of the classic versions, with thick cushions and generous back and arm rests. If you prefer a different model – due to lack of space, insufficient lighting or simply personal taste – armchairs with a longer seat are a good choice. Comfortable cushions add even more reading comfort, as they let you adjust your back position flexibly and are ideal for supporting your elbows. One example with a very long seat is the Night Club armchair by Objekten, which belongs to the lounge chair category. It stands out with its fold-out footstool in the shape of a wedge cushion.
Get inspired by our wide range of models. We'll be happy to deliver exactly the designer reading chair you like best.
2. Which reading chair suits your interior style?
Reading chairs in a modern design suit almost any interior style. Thanks to its understated elegance, the Ro armchair by Fritz Hansen is a piece that complements your furniture beautifully. Playful designs in conventional materials with curved lines are a good fit for a country-style interior, for example. The simpler the design, the more easily a reading chair fits into a minimalist or semi-minimalist room. The Magis Proust armchair, on the other hand, creates a striking contrast. Its unusual design is reminiscent of a baroque throne, and in bright colours this designer reading chair draws every eye.
3. What size should your reading chair be?
In an online shop, your favourite can look smaller than it will in your home. That's why we list the exact dimensions for every reading chair in our range. As a rule: the larger and brighter the room, the more substantial the reading chair can be. Reading chairs with a footstool – whether a separate piece or integrated and fold-out – also need enough space. If the room is fairly small, armchairs with visible legs are a good choice. They look lighter and more graceful.

4. The material defines the character
It's not just the size and look of a designer armchair that matter. The material it's made of should also play a part in your choice. Do you prefer a firmer seat, or would you rather sink cosily into your chair? Upholstered armchairs are usually padded with foam or other soft materials. The Cloudscape armchair by Diesel is also available with a down filling. Covers are made from materials such as polyester, viscose, wool and new wool. Synthetic fibres are more hard-wearing than natural fibres. Natural fibres are less lightfast but regulate moisture better. Blends of wool, viscose and/or polyester are breathable and easier to care for than pure natural fibres.
5. How to care for your reading chair
If there's a stain, don't hesitate: reach straight for lukewarm water and a clean cotton cloth. To avoid unsightly limescale marks, use distilled water if possible. Apply only light pressure and use large circular movements – this is the gentlest way to treat the fabric. Don't use a hairdryer; let the chair air-dry instead. For very stubborn stains on upholstered armchairs, you can use a suitable upholstery or carpet cleaner. Make sure the cleaner is water-soluble and test it on a hidden area first to check it won't damage the fabric.
For fabric covers, brush the surface of your armchair gently and vacuum it regularly with a special upholstery nozzle. If the material is a textured fabric, keep pets away from it if possible so their claws don't pull threads. Smooth surfaces such as leather and faux leather can simply be wiped with a slightly damp cloth without detergent. Treat genuine leather regularly with a special care product to keep it supple and stop it cracking.
6. Stylish accessories: how to show off your reading chair
Are you a bookworm who wants not just a comfortable reading chair but a whole cosy reading corner for your favourite hobby? Perhaps your living room has a pretty bay window for it. Add an elegant designer floor lamp that matches your reading chair, and you'll be surprised by the effect. Many designer floor lamps are adjustable, so you get just the right light for reading. On parquet, wood-effect laminate or tiles, a pretty felt rug looks especially good in your new reading corner. You'll find colourful designs in our online shop as well as subtle shades – it's entirely down to your taste. Of course, your new reading chair also combines beautifully with other furniture. An elegant designer coffee table gives you plenty of space during reading breaks for snacks, drinks and more. Or group your reading chair with a stylish designer sofa around the coffee table. There are no limits to your creative ideas.
7. How much does a high-quality reading chair cost?
Comfortable reading chairs are available in a wide range of price categories. In the lower price range, you'll find very attractive and comfortable models by Objekten or Magis, for example.
The armchairs by Swiss manufacturer Vitra are designed and developed by many well-known designers. Its models are in the mid to upper price range.
The Ro armchair by Fritz Hansen is a little higher in price. This Danish manufacturer started out as a joinery workshop in Copenhagen in the 19th century and has since grown into a manufacturer that has written furniture history with many renowned architects and designers.
The Tired Man by by Lassen is in the upper price range. This generous classic was designed by the talented Lassen brothers in the 1930s and has now been reissued. The family business still owns the rights to the designs and continues their design line to the highest standards.
