The Dutch design brand Moooi was founded in 2001 by Marcel Wanders (Art Director), Casper Vissers (Managing Director) and Hans Lensvelt (Production Manager).
In Dutch, "mooi" (with a double "o") means beautiful – so Moooi (with a triple "o") means "extra beautiful".
The young design company's collection brings together works by well-known names and up-and-coming talents from the Dutch design scene, such as Joep van Lieshout, Edward van Vliet and Bertjan Pot, as well as internationally renowned designers such as Jasper Morrison and Ross Lovegrove.
The Moooi collection focuses mainly on lamps and furniture. The most unusual and best-known designs come from Marcel Wanders, the Art Director himself. From the tilted Ming ceramic vase and the Horse Lamp and Rabbit Lamp, whose shade is held by a life-size horse or rabbit, to the upholstered, heavy-looking V.I.P. Chair, every Moooi product offers an element of surprise and aims for a particular effect.
The production of many Moooi products is just as unusual as their appearance. The shape of the Sponge Vase, for example, is taken from a natural sponge, whose imprint is captured in porcelain using a process developed by Wanders himself – making every vase unique.
All in all, Moooi is a strong embodiment of the Dutch design style. A look at the long list of personalities associated with the company shows how much Moooi benefits from the rich harvest of the thriving Dutch design, architecture and art scene.
