World-famous design at over 70

Nanna Ditzel (1923–2005) was a Danish designer associated with postmodernism who became known in the 1990s for her rebellious designs – by then she was well over 70. Her designs often began with a personal problem that she tried to solve. Time and again, she managed to turn her personal ideas and dreams into functional, useful objects.

Nanna Ditzel was fascinated by new materials and innovative manufacturing processes. She made furniture, jewellery, tableware and textiles from materials such as fibreglass, wickerwork and foam rubber before anyone else, and she created the world-famous upholstery fabric "Hallingdal" for the Danish manufacturer Kvadrat. In the 1990s, she designed a chair series for Fredericia that is still highly regarded today. Chairs played a major role for Ditzel. To her, most chairs looked like a framework of crutches that you could more or less sit on. When designing a chair, it was very important to her to consider who would later sit in it. Chair and sitter form an important connection that shouldn't be underestimated.

Nanna Ditzel is now one of Denmark's best-known designers and received numerous awards during her lifetime. Her passion for design accompanied her throughout her life and, even in her seventies, made her a role model for young designers around the world.
