Stefan Diez was born in 1971 in Freisingen, Germany. After an apprentice as a cabinet maker and a year in India where he worked for furniture companies, he started in 1996 to study at the Stuttgart Academy of Bildene Künste. During his industrial design studies, he started to work as an assistant for Konstantin Grcic and Richard Sapper.
In 2002, he founded his own design studio in Munich. There, he works for renowned manufacturer like Elmar Flötotto, Authentics or Wilkhahn and was awarded for his creations with several design awards (among others: Design Report Award 2002, Red Dot Design Award 2005, Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2005).
Stefan Diez prefers a practical approach and thus, his work does not develop through creating at the drawing table but rather working and trying directly with the material. He likes to be responsible for his work from the early start until the end, delegation is not his favourite and thus, through the almost perfectionist craft work, he designs almost on his own.
