myfelt – handmade felt rugs
The rug manufacturer myfelt, based in Berlin-Charlottenburg in Germany, has made it its mission to produce hand-knotted rugs from felt balls. The rugs combine felt, quality and design, crafted using centuries-old Nepalese handcraft traditions in a sustainable, modern production process.
High-quality wool and environmentally friendly dyes
myfelt rugs are made of 100% New Zealand new wool, which is among the finest in the world. At the rug workshop in Nepal, the untreated wool is combed and washed several times. The wool is then dyed in the appropriate colour according to strictly environmentally friendly guidelines in a dye works certified by the fair trade "Label STEP®".
Felting and knotting
The subsequent felting is the most time-consuming stage. Each individual ball is shaped by hand into its final form in several steps. The finished balls are then sewn together into a rug using a knotting technique specially developed by myfelt. A single rug can be made of up to 50,000 felt balls.
Durable and one of a kind
The rugs meet high standards and are made from carefully selected materials. Every rug is a handmade one-off, so slight differences in colour and material may occur. These are not a sign of lower quality but proof of genuine handcraft. The combination of workmanship, quality and choice of materials creates a distinctive, durable product.
Responsibility and social commitment
myfelt sees itself as a social project. Fair wages and fair working conditions for everyone involved in production create a modern, sustainable supply chain. Since 2014, myfelt has worked with GoodWeave, one of the largest fair trade organisations in the rug industry. Its inspectors can check the work processes in the myfelt workshop at any time and without notice to ensure that the high fair trade standards are met. GoodWeave campaigns against child labour and for the reintegration into society of children from the rug industry. The GoodWeave standard also takes social and environmental criteria into account.
