Wooden Hippopotamus

Kay Bojesen ’s Hippopotamus

The wooden hippopotamus is part of a collection of wooden animals designed by Kay Bojesen between 1935 and 1957. It is Kay Bojesen ’s most angular animal design and, with its movable mouth, is also the only one with a practical function.

Fantasy Figure and Design Object

Kay Bojesen himself used this endearing colossus as a pencil holder. With this function, the hippopotamus is the ultimate gadget for young and old alike, whether on a desk at home or at work. Thus, the wooden hippopotamus from Kay Bojesen occupies a unique space between fantasy figure and design object. Full of soul, humor, and craftsmanship, it appeals to the playful child in all of us.

Collectible and Gift Idea

But not only in children’s rooms—the wooden animals from Kay Bojesen have also become coveted collectibles on shelves and in offices, passed down from one generation to the next. That’s why these animals are perfect as gifts for any occasion where people live and play: baptisms, birthdays, confirmations, high school graduations, weddings, and anniversaries. The wooden hippopotamus from Kay Bojesen is available in various types of wood.
