Bench made of steel and recycled fishing nets
The Ocean Mater ’s bench is part of a series of tables and chairs originally designed by Nanna Ditzel in 1955. In this reissue, classic Danish furniture is reinterpreted using recycled plastic recovered from the ocean. The bench is available in various lengths and consists of a steel frame with a burnished finish and seat panels made from recycled fishing nets and hard plastic. The bench is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and creates a modern, clean-lined look in any setting.Recycled plastic from the world’s oceans
Mater uses recycled plastic for the bench from the Danish cleantech company Plastix, one of the world’s few companies specializing in mechanical recycling. Plastix transforms discarded fishing nets, trawl nets, ropes, and other plastic waste products into valuable recycled plastic raw materials, known as “ & ” “Green Plastics & .” Before being processed into Green Plastics’ recycled beads, the fishing nets are sorted, analyzed, and cleaned, and then, in the final step, processed into pellets. The plastic beads are later melted down and injection-molded into flexible table slats for use in Ocean bench. From the Ditzels’ Archive
Originally manufactured by Kolds Savværk until the late 1950s, the furniture pieces were initially designed for the Ditzels’ personal use. The first design from 1955 consisted of steel frames and wood veneer parts. The reissues have been enlarged by five percent to accommodate modern proportions. The simple forms and lightness of the series embody the Ditzels’ design sensibility, which was at once precise, practical, and playful. Mater , together with Dennie Ditzel, searched through the Ditzels’ archives. In this reissue, the series helps reduce plastic waste and contributes to achieving Goals 12, 14, 15, and 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
