Thonet S 32 VH: Bar stool in a cantilever design by Marcel Breuer
The Thonet S 32 VH applies the cantilever principle to the bar stool. It was designed by architect Marcel Breuer in 1928, during his time in Berlin. To this day, the cantilever chair family remains among the best-selling modern seating pieces, bringing a sense of lightness to bars, counters, and living spaces.
Clean lines inspired by the Bauhaus movement
Breuer headed the woodworking workshop at the Bauhaus from 1925 to 1928, and this period shaped the stool’s aesthetic. Minimalist forms, clean lines, and an airy structure make it a piece that blends seamlessly into a wide variety of settings. Whether in a restaurant, a conference room, or a private living space, the stool has a timeless and understated appearance.
Lightness through the cantilever principle
Instead of rigid back legs, the structure gives slightly when sat upon. This rocking effect contributes to seating comfort and makes the stool appear slender despite its presence. The slender legs and airy seat prevent it from appearing too heavy visually.
A Variety of Styles for Your Space
The series is available in various seat designs, including versions with wicker, a contoured seat, or an upholstered cushion. This way, you can find a stool that suits your style and needs. The cantilever family has been produced by Thonet since 1930 and is thus one of the classics that have stood the test of time across generations.
