Glasses Inspired by Glaciers
The drinking glasses in the Ultima Thule series were designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1968. Today, these classic glasses from Iittala are true testaments to their era. Ultima Thule is a collection of glasses that clearly reflect the long and arduous work that went into perfecting the glassworking technique. The glasses’ unique effect and appearance mimic nature: Tapio Wirkkala was inspired in his design by the melting ice of Lapland’s glaciers. Hence the name Ultima Thule, which is the name of the world’s northernmost point on land. Today, the Ultima Thule drinking glasses are considered classics. The series played a major role in Iittala ’s international breakthrough. This exquisitely crafted collection showcases the distinctive power of Finnish glasswork. The shapes of the “ Iittala ” glasses vary from piece to piece, depending on how the molten glass flows around the wooden molds during production.
