Marimekko in bloom – with the Unikko pattern
"No floral patterns" was the credo of Marimekko's head, Armi Ratia, in the early 1960s. "A floral pattern can never match the beauty of a real flower," Ratia was convinced – until Maija Isola proved her wrong with her Unikko pattern.
The Finnish designer dared to dream. She found inspiration in the beauty of the things around her. With bright colours, sweeping shapes and simple lines, she opened Armi Ratia's eyes: a floral pattern can indeed capture the beauty of a real flower. Today, Marimekko Unikko – Finnish for "poppy" – is the best-known and most widely used motif of the long-established Finnish brand. Unikko stands for summer, sunshine and good cheer, and it's just as popular today as it was in 1964.
Marimekko Unikko conquers the home
Marimekko Unikko now features on countless items, from Unikko cushion covers and shower curtains to Unikko bed linen. The iconic design – in bold red, black or more subtle tones – has even been spotted on credit cards, Manolo Blahnik shoes, televisions and parasols. The floral motif simply works everywhere. In the 1990s, Isola's daughter Kristina rescaled the Unikko pattern so that it could also make its full impact in a smaller format. These designs are called Pieni Unikko, meaning "little poppy".
