Isamu Noguchi was born in Los Angeles in the USA in 1904, the son of Japanese poet Yone Noguchi and American writer Leonie Gilmour. He studied at Columbia University and at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School.

He then set up his first studio and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1927. He went on to work as an assistant to Constantin Brancusi in Paris in France and held his first exhibition in New York, USA. He studied brush drawing in China and worked with clay under Jinmatsu Uno in Japan. This life and work across different cultures is reflected in his art.

Isamu Noguchi is regarded as an all-round talent. Alongside sculptures, stage sets, furniture, lighting and interiors, he also designed public squares and gardens. His sculptural style, rooted in an organic formal language, had a lasting influence on the design of the 1950s. "My father, Yone Noguchi, is Japanese and has long been known in his poetry as an interpreter of the East to the West. I should like to do the same with sculpture," he wrote in his application for the Guggenheim Fellowship. Isamu Noguchi died in New York in 1988.
