Born in Ferrara in Italy in 1951, Michele De Lucchi graduated in architecture in Florence in 1975.

During the 1970s, De Lucchi was also a prominent member and co-founder of the Cavart, Alchymia and Memphis movements, whose radical and experimental views of architecture were directed against the design establishment of the time. In 1973, dressed as a Napoleonic general, the young architecture student even stood guard outside the Milan Triennale to protest against too many superfluous products. Into the 1980s, De Lucchi designed postmodern furniture, home accessories and laminates for the "young wild ones".

In 1988, he founded his own "Studio De Lucchi". Before that, from 1979, he had worked as a design consultant for Olivetti, where he was appointed chief designer in 1992.

In 1998, he founded the company "aMDL", which today has offices in Milan and Rome.

Alongside numerous exhibitions at the Museo Diocesano d'Ivrea, the Triennale di Milano, the Permanente di Milano, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni di Roma and the Neues Museum in Berlin in Germany, his work can also be found in the permanent collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in France.

Michele De Lucchi's best-known designs include the timeless Tolomeo lamp, designed with Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide in 1987, as well as the Lido sofa and Oceanic lamp (both 1981 for Memphis), the Segmenti office accessories for Kartell (1988), the OFX1000 fax machine and the Echos 20 notebook (both 1995) and the Art Jet 20 printer (1999) for Olivetti.

In addition to buildings for Deutsche Bank and Deutsche Bahn's travel centre in Frankfurt in Germany, Michele De Lucchi has also designed buildings for several Italian banks, shaping their corporate image for years to come.

In 2001, Michele De Lucchi was appointed professor in the Faculty of Design and Arts at the University of Venice, and in 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from Kingston University for his efforts to improve the quality of life and living.
