Frequently asked questions
When should you put up Christmas decorations?
In Germany, the traditional starting point for Christmas decorations is the first Sunday of Advent. Even though supermarket shelves are stocked with festive decorations and sweet treats from September, people traditionally only decorate their homes after Totensonntag.
This day of remembrance falls on the last Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent, when believers reflect on eternal life and remember the dead. Once it has passed, you can officially start decorating for Christmas. It usually doesn't take long before windows, doors and balconies all around the neighbourhood are sparkling and shimmering. Stars, Father Christmas figures and colourful fairy lights create a cosy feel and build anticipation for Christmas.
Of course, you can start earlier with cosy accessories such as scented candles and tealights.
How long should Christmas decorations stay up?
Traditionally, the Christmas tree and decorations stay up until 6 January, the Feast of the Epiphany, also known as Three Kings' Day. This day officially marks the end of the Christmas season.
On the following Saturday, many towns in Germany organise a Christmas tree collection, often in return for a small donation. That's why many people take the holiday as an opportunity to pack their Christmas decorations away again.
