1. Side tables vs. coffee tables – what's the difference?

Side tables have a diameter of no more than 60 cm and can be up to 70 cm high. Coffee tables, by contrast, are usually standalone pieces that are lower and have a larger diameter.

As a bedside table in the bedroom, a surface in the hallway or anywhere else you need somewhere to put things down without adding a heavy piece of furniture, a side table is the right choice. Side tables are easy to handle, easy to move and versatile. Many designer side tables even have a handle that makes them easier to carry.

That's why you don't need to worry before buying about whether the size is in proportion to your sofa or whether there's enough space.

"Side tables by the sofa can be an attractive and practical addition to the coffee table. You can place them right next to it or, as needed, beside the sofa's armrests, for example. That's why many brands offer coffee tables and side tables in the same design. This creates a sense of unity between the pieces in the room, even when they don't stand directly next to each other." - Viktoria, interior expert

2. Side tables for the sofa: round or square?

When it comes to shape, a C-shaped side table (1) is the right choice for large L-shaped sofas and sofas without armrests. It slides over the seat and can even take the place of an armrest.

A group of round side tables (2), which you can move around depending on the size of the sofa and the number of guests, is ideal for sofas with a chaise longue.

For generous sofa landscapes, we recommend square side tables in different sizes and heights (3) or extendable side tables.

The perfect addition to long, straight sofas is a combination of side tables arranged lengthways (4).

If you'd like several tables, choose side tables from the same manufacturer in different sizes, or a side table set in different heights, for an effortlessly cohesive arrangement.

Tip: "An arrangement of side tables makes your living area feel livelier and more modern. Combining different heights adds depth to the room, and there's always something to suit what you need – somewhere to put your book, your drink or a decorative accessory."

Side tables are not just an attractive decorative element – they also offer useful extra functions. Models with storage space (1) are modelled on baskets, while side tables on castors (2) make perfect drinks trolleys. Many side tables also come with practical features such as an integrated tray, a magazine rack (3), a handle (4), a built-in light or even a charging station.

4. Mix & match side tables – here's how

Mixing different side table designs looks particularly stylish and individual. The most important rules for a harmonious result are to keep the basic shape and to repeat design features. Picking up on materials, colours or base types, such as pedestal bases or delicate metal frames, creates a stylish ensemble. When it comes to height, on the other hand, you're free to choose – combining side tables of different heights is exactly what makes the arrangement expressive and interesting.

With unusual models, the rule is: let eye-catchers stay eye-catchers, and pair them with simple, minimalist pieces.

5. Metal, wood or glass side tables – how to choose the right material

Garden, kitchen or living room – side tables are as varied in their materials, and the moods they create, as they are in their uses.

A woven side table (1) is particularly on trend. Its unusual texture stands out and brings a natural feel to any room.

Plastic models (2) come in a huge variety of colours and shapes, from white and black to gold. They are also easy to clean and, thanks to their low weight, easy to move around.

Metal side tables (3) share these practical qualities. Thanks to their robust material, you can also use them in the garden or on the balcony.

For a modern look, choose a stone side table (4), which gets its distinctive appearance from its textures and veining. Some of these tables are very heavy, though, which limits how flexibly you can move them.

A wooden side table (5) is a particularly robust and durable piece of furniture. Its colour can change over time, and it brings warmth and cosiness to a room.

Glass side tables (6), on the other hand, look light and airy, but also modern and cool. In households with children in particular, look for safety glass so that it doesn't shatter into sharp pieces if it breaks.

Indoors, you can choose freely. For side tables that you also want to take outside, however, choose teak, powder-coated steel or plastic that is specifically labelled for outdoor use.
