1. Cushion covers - materials and their properties

The material of a decorative cushion cover depends entirely on how you'll use it and the look you want. Covers for indoor use are often made of cotton and have a classic look. The material is easy to care for and pleasant against the skin. Wool or knitted covers, on the other hand, look cosy and add warmth to a room. Felt cushion covers are particularly robust and easily repel dirt and moisture. If you like retro style, corduroy or velvet is your best choice.

"Cushions made of special materials such as sheepskin make a lovely statement and are especially snug, but they are purely decorative. If you need a cushion to lean against or snuggle up to every day, choose flat, tightly woven cushion covers in unusual colours and patterns." - Viktoria, interior expert

For outdoor use, manufacturers such as Fermob, Skagerak and Weishäupl work with weather-resistant materials. Cover fabrics such as Dolan or Barriere are made of acrylic or polyester and withstand wind and weather. They are waterproof, UV-resistant and easy to clean with a damp cloth. With outdoor cushions, also make sure the filling can cope with moisture.

2. Cushion fillings – natural or synthetic?

The filling of a cushion depends entirely on the comfort you want. For decorative cushions such as sofa cushions and cuddle cushions, feathers and down are the best choice. They retain warmth and make your home really cosy. This kind of filling can also be washed. However, make sure you shake the filling regularly while it dries so the feathers don't clump together.

Synthetic fillings made of foam or polyester wadding are a little less expensive and extremely easy to care for, as they can be washed at low temperatures. They are also a good option if you're allergic to materials of animal origin. The disadvantages of synthetic fillings are that they don't retain warmth as well and are made from non-natural resources.

3. Size and shape – the right cushion for every use

Square sofa cushions and covers usually come in a standard size of 50 x 50 cm or 40 x 40 cm. Rectangular versions are often made in sizes of 30 x 50 cm or 40 x 60 cm. In our shop, you'll find the right cushion pad for every cover size.

1. Vitra – Classic cushion Maharam | 2. &Tradition - Indigo Collect SC27-SC30 cushion | 3. AYTM - Coria cushion | 4. Muuto – Twine cushion

Rectangular cushions are particularly good on an armchair or bed. They echo the width of the furniture while providing comfort for your head and back. Square cushions, on the other hand, don't take up much space and work well on a chair, for example, making it instantly cosier.

Vitra – Home Sweet Home cushion | Artek – Rivi cushion cover

Round or square cushions, knots or other shapes – it's entirely down to your personal taste. Bear in mind that decorative cushions in unusual shapes, such as the Knot cushion by Design House Stockholm, make ideal eye-catchers but are less suited to snuggling up with.

4. Combining cushions – ideas for your cushion arrangement

Graphic and elegant in black and white
If you don't like things too colourful but still want to add accents with cushions on your bed or sofa, a black-and-white combination is the best choice. You can play with striking patterns and shapes as you like, while the coordinated colours keep a clear connection.

1. Marimekko - Siirtolapuutarha cushion cover | 2. Vitra – Classic cushion Maharam | 3. Artek – Siena cushion cover

A colour mix in pastel shades
If you want to combine several colours, choose one cushion as a "link" that contains all the colours of the ensemble. This creates a harmonious arrangement despite different materials, shapes and colours.

"Cushions can change the look of a sofa in an instant – and sometimes even of the whole room. With colourful cushions, a restrained, single-coloured sofa landscape quickly becomes an eye-catcher. If you don't want to commit to one colour, you can adapt your colour scheme to the seasons or your latest favourite colour." Viktoria, interior expert

1. Tom Dixon – Soft cushion | 2. Design House Stockholm – Knot cushion | 3. Ferm Living – Loop cushion | 4. HAY – Dot cushion

Soft minimalism, tone on tone
For a calm, cohesive look at home, combine cushions in similar colours. A tone-on-tone combination in the soft minimalism style creates a cosy atmosphere with a refined touch. Subtle patterns and textures on the cushion covers add extra interest.

A boho mix of patterns and materials
You can create a boho hippie vibe by combining cushions in different colours and materials. With mix and match, anything goes. To still create a harmonious overall look, repeat colours and shapes across the different cushions. You can also follow a theme: if you feel drawn to nature, for example, choose cushion covers in shades of green or with floral motifs and combine them with natural materials such as sheepskin.

1. OYOY - Kyoto cushion | 2. Bloomingville – sheepskin cushion | 3. AYTM - Sanati cushion

5. Summary – what to look for when buying cushions

  • Pay attention to the material of the cushion cover and the effect it creates: cotton is the classic choice and suits any arrangement, felt is robust and looks natural, knitted fabrics and sheepskin create a cosy feel, and corduroy and velvet bring retro flair.
  • For the filling, you can choose between natural and synthetic materials: feathers and down are cosy and retain warmth very well but need a little more care. Synthetic fillings, such as polyester wadding, are easier to care for and better suited to allergy sufferers.
  • Large rectangular decorative cushions are particularly suitable for sofas and beds, while small square cushions also fit on narrow chairs and add a cosy touch.
  • To underline your personal style, choose a cushion combination that suits you. Aim for a harmonious mix of colours, patterns and materials.
