Nanna Ditzel

World-famous Design with over 70 Years

Nanna Ditzel (1923-2005) was a Danish representative of postmodernism who became known in the 90s by her rebellious designs. Ditzel was already well over 70 years old at this time. In her designs, a subjective issue often preceded her designs that she tried to solve. Still, she succeeded again and again in turning her personal visions and dreams into functional and useful objects.

Ditzel was fascinated by new materials and innovative manufacturing processes. She produced furniture, jewellery, tableware and textiles from materials such as fibreglass, wattle and foam rubber before everyone else had done it and she is the inventor of the world famous fabric "Hallingdal" for the Danish manufacturer Kvadrat. For Fredericia, she created a chair series in the 90s, which remains unsurpassed to this day. Chairs have played a major role for Ditzel. To Ditzel, most chairs looked like a scaffold of crutches on which you can sit more or less comfortable. For her, when designing a chair it was very important to make sure who would later sit on it. Chair and user take an important link, which is not to underestimate.

Today, Ditzel is one of the most famous designers from Denmark, who won numerous awards in her lifetime. Her passion for design accompanied her all her life and made her with over seventy years a role model for young designers all over the world. At this age, other people sit in an armchair, enjoy their retirement and not once think about lifting a finger.
