Bathroom accessories: design for your bathroom
Long overlooked, bathroom accessories slowly caught designers' attention at the end of the 1970s. Bit by bit, the purely functional "wet room" feel disappeared from German bathrooms – and rightly so. The bathroom is a living space and deserves as much attention as the kitchen and living room. Modern bathroom accessories add charm and a homely atmosphere.
With stylish, carefully placed bathroom accessories, you can shape your bathroom and make it feel more welcoming. Many designers work intensively on creating bathroom accessories that are not only functional but also look good – so your toothbrush and toothpaste are no longer the centre of attention.
The right accessories – what to look out for when buying:
1. Space
2. Style and material
3. Combining pieces
4. Mounting
Space: your bathroom sets the framework
How much space and surface area do you have in your bathroom? Measure not only the space between toilet, washbasin and shower, but also the width of your shelves and surfaces.
Even a 2 m² bathroom can look better with the right accessories. Rather than overloading a small space with laundry baskets and lots of little boxes, add subtle accents with a toothbrush mug and soap dish in the same colour. Instead of a towel rail, you can put up elegant or colourful wall hooks. Some soap dishes and toothbrush mugs attach to the tiled splashback with a suction cup, saving surface space.
With 6 m² or more, you have plenty of room to play with. Bath mats, cabinets with extra storage, towel rails and matching bins, tissue boxes, toilet brushes and toilet roll holders – there's no limit to your creativity.
Style and material: stylish and moisture-resistant
Every designer and manufacturer has their own style. Eva Solo's products are mostly understated – stainless steel, in black or white. Joseph Joseph, on the other hand, favours splashes of colour. When it comes to design, follow your own taste – but choose materials carefully. Humidity is high in the bathroom, and the material has to withstand it. That's why plastic and silicone are popular choices. But wooden bathroom accessories can also resist moisture and bacteria – for example, pieces made of teak, bamboo or resistant oak. A varnish offers extra protection, but isn't strictly necessary for woods with a high tannin content. Wooden pieces also bring a maritime feel – perfect for your own little retreat at home.
Bathroom accessory sets – stylishly combined
Sets are a great way to give a bathroom a cohesive look. Alessi's Birillo series offers a range of matching bathroom accessories in white or black – soap dispensers, bins, toothbrush mugs, various bathroom containers, toilet roll holders, toilet brushes, towel stands and much more. With their rounded shapes, all of these pieces from a manufacturer otherwise known for its love of colour blend subtly into the bathroom. The Danish manufacturer Södahl specialises in high-quality collections with a monochrome look that combine beautifully with each other.
If you prefer something more refined, take a look at the Bath collection by Menu. It offers elegant bathroom accessories made of white or black lacquered steel with stainless steel details. Elegant, pleasant and understated – typical Scandinavian design. Here, too, you can get everything as a set: toilet brush, soap dispenser, toothbrush holder, toilet roll holder and pedal bin.
Mounting: bathroom accessories without drilling
Reaching for the drill every time you change something in a room is a hassle – and completely unnecessary. Even small bathroom accessories can make a positive difference. At the Connox design shop, you'll find small bathroom accessories as well as towel hooks and toilet roll holders that you can mount or set up without drilling. Some simply attach with a suction cup.
