A Fish as Ginger Grater

With the Boga ginger grater by Valerio Sommella, Alessi offers a useful kitchen utensil with fins. The shape of the grater made of satin finished steel was inspired by the Bogue fish, a species of seabream with a tapered body. On days where the grater is not needed, it can simply be left on the table as a decorative element.

Inspiration from Japan

Valerio Sommella got the idea for the ginger grater in Japan. In Europe, it is not common to use a specially-made grater in order to shred ginger, whereas in Japan, the ginger grater is a standard kitchen tool. In a street in Tokyo, where many shops were located for kitchen utensils, the designer saw numerous ginger graters in various shapes, materials and sizes. In the midst of all the Japanese ginger graters, Sommella decided to design his own with a narrow tapered body, large bug eyes and elegant fins.

Beautifully crafted but not very practical

While like all Alessi products, the grater is beautifully crafted out of a high grade of stainless steel. Using it is however not as great, as its keeps clogging up and then the grater does not work effectively anymore.
