Like many of his other pieces, Alvar Aalto designed the Armchair 41 for a specific building: the armchair was initially designed for the hospital in its namesake Paimio, but soon thereafter started its triumphal march around the world. Since the Armchair 41 Paimio is made completely out of birch wood, its silhouette is extremely slim. Thanks to the bent, soft birch wood, the armchair still has resilient characteristics that make it more comfortable than it appears at first glance.
Thanks to these qualities, the Armchair Paimio 41 became one of the most famous pieces of furniture by Aalto. Artek honours this by making an Icon Poster for Paimio. The German designer duo Greige has illustrated the armchair in its iconic shape as an pictogram on a poster, so everybody can bring the design classic into their home without sacrificing a large amount of space.
