Artek: Arts and technology since 1935
The Finnish company Artek was founded in the year 1935 from four at that time young and idealistic designers: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Marie Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The Artec business idea was to show, to offer and to sell furniture and modern living culture. The four Artek founders defended modern ideas and basic approaches to everyday room designs, urban planning, architecture and design.
Still today Artek is known as one of the most innovative modern design-products purchaser. The design concept was built on Alvar Aalto’s heritage: functionality and timeless aesthetic are the essential elements that unify Artek’s products. Artek’s understanding of furniture systems is established on the ideals of standards and systems, like they have their origin in Alvar Aaltos L-System. This thinking makes Artek’s furniture versatile and allows adaptation to individual projects. Artek’s furniture does not only suit perfectly private areas, but also public rooms, museums, schools, hotels and offices.
Artek’s headquarter is in Finland. Still today the company that meanwhile belongs to a Swedish business keeps contact to Alvar and Aino Aalto’s family as well as to the Alvar Aalto foundation. Artek stands in the tradition of its four founders, but dared the step into a new era at the same time. Artek combines the ideals of its idealistic founders with a contemporary and dynamic design-approach.
The Artek design was shaped by strong and talented personalities, whose radical ideas are still inspiring and alive today. The Artek founders have developed a more accessible, human and experimental design language that obtained a large part of its inspiration from the nature. The experience from more than 70 years of business history and the further development of traditional manufacturing methods ensure that Alvar and Aino Aalto’s and other products stay timeless and outlast over generations.
