Table lamp by Poul Henningsen
The table lamp PH 3½-2½ is part of a family of lamps by Louis Poulsen, the PH of 3½-3 pendant lamp, as well as the PH 3½-2½ to floor lamp. The lamp designed by Poul Henningsen, who designed the original lamp back in 1920 and whose initials still today form the name of the luminaire.
Ideal lighting setting with three shade system
The original designed by Poul Henningsen was influenced by functionalism – some would even say industrialism. This is especially thanks to his functional access to what he wanted to achieve with his lamp, namely to create a lamp that generates an optimal illumination in any position.
The lamp is 100% glare-free. The small table lamp PH 3½-2½ was designed based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system that directs most of the light downwards.
The white painted inner side of the upper shade gently directs the light down. The two bottom opal glass shades offer a large glare-free surface. Thus, the light source is used optimally to create a comfortable and functional light.
The light goes exactly where it is supposed to go. It does not glare, but illuminates the area under the lamp in functional, pleasant and evocative way. One is almost tempted to say, in a decorative way. The table lamp is a decorative object either way, whether switched on or off.
Re-edition of the original to the details
The upper shade is composed of centrifugal cast aluminium and comes with a white lacquered inside and an outside painted in yellow, green, red or white - the exact nuances of color that PH himself had used for his lamp series. The freedom of choice between the colors allows the presence of the lamp, depending on the courage, imagination and creativity, to be more or less prominent. The top shade is also supplied with a white lacquered, rolled edge that makes it seem more voluminous and also sharpens the iconic profile of the three shade lamp.
The two other shades of the PH 3½-2½ below the top shade also consist of handblown, opal, three-layer glass. The inside shades are glossy and the outside ones are sandblasted, resulting in a soft, diffuse light distribution.
The shade’s stem and base are a unique detail that testify with how much accuracy Poul Henningsen worked on every lamp. The body consists of velvety, matte brown copper and thus resembles the bronzed brass of the time. This browning process is no longer used for environmental reasons. The new solution is still very authentic and is not as sensitive to external influences, as it was the case with the browned surface.
Decorative lighting for any room
Due to its small size, the PH 3½-2½ table lamp offers excellent placement opportunities in rooms where small spots of light are supposed to be created to make the atmosphere pleasant and to highlight the dimensions of the room.
If you are looking for a lighting concept for the living room, dining room, bedroom or for whatever other room, with the entire PH 3½-family you cannot only create great light, but also a very decorative and attractive interior.
The PH 3½-2½ table lamp is equipped with an E14 socket, in which a wide variety of light sources and several other LED variants fit.
