Self-Taught Artist with Cartoonish Handwriting
Martin Bigum is a Danish artist and writer who has made a name for himself as a visual artist.
The autodidact experimented with graphics, photography, video art, installations and poetry in the 90s and exhibited his works in numerous national and international galleries and museums.
The artist is known for his cartoony handwriting, which runs like a thread through his works. Between the ages of 15 to 22, Bigum worked as a cartoon artist for the Danish edition of the American satire magazine MAD. He gave up his work there to focus more on his own art.
He gets inspiration from his immediate surroundings. His paintings, photographs and documents are often a reflection of his experiences and travels, which he expresses in an intense, often humourous, and colourful manner.
