Wästberg is a young, Swedish lamp manufacturer and concentrates on technique and form. The small but fine collection includes lamps made by famous designers, such as Maarten Van Severen, David Chipperfield, or the trio Claesson Koivisto Rune. Wästberg established itself in Scandinavia in a very short period of time, won numerous design awards, and appeared in specialised magazines.

It all started with the vision of the company’s founder: Magnus Wästberg wanted to change the idea of design with lamps. Away from the omnipresent light, finding the appreciation of discreet shadows and contrasts. Cold and sterile rooms should become atmospheric with lamps from Wästberg. The light solutions of the Swedish company create intimate spheres and ensure that people feel comfortable – Magnus Wästberg thought of bonfires having accompanied people for many millennia, when he founded his company.

Wästberg: The philosophy of light

Magnus Wästberg wrote to some of the most renowned designers and architects in the world of light in order to achieve his goal. He asked himself what they would think of his vision, how they would realise the newest discoveries of science, and what they would wish regarding quality. The resonance was overwhelming.

If one wishes to summarise the Wästberg philosophy, it would sound like this: 1. General room lighting should be replaced by direct illumination. 2. Direct light should offer all the qualities of a work lamp, but with a wider field of application. 3. Direct light should include energy efficient illuminants; do not dazzle, do not flicker, and the light should be adjustable. With these demands, the young Swedish manufacturer creates surprising, innovative, and complete lamps, which one would expect from established companies.
