Alongside the tree, biscuits and mulled wine, a nativity set is always part of a proper Christmas Eve. Happy people love to carve out these things themselves. However if you lack the handicraft skills for this, you end up having to buy expensive figurines at a Christmas market.
And what’s offered there is often deeply gaudy. The Berliner artist Oliver Fabel believes that people don’t need such iconographic baggage anymore and has constructed his own version of the nativity scene: simply, wooden blocks with descriptions printed on them, handmade and a recipient of the Formpreis design award in 2008. Amazingly, the minimalist figurine cluster has an immediate effect when you view it, so strongly is the image of the Holy Family with kings, shepherds, ox and donkey branded into popular consciousness.A smart idea for purists.
