The Chair 23 by Artek is a design from 1930, which was represented in Artek’s very first collection. Alvar Aalto designed the early cantilevered chair to match the Side Table 606 completely in black, with the typical Aalto renouncement of unnecessary details. The Chair 23 is suitable for highly different surroundings thanks to the simple shape and colour.
The Chair 23 was initially designed to be used in the Aalto-designed clinic in Paimio, as it is ideal for use in public buildings on account of its stackability. With a seat made from birch veneer, frame of bent matte lacquered steel tubing and simple shape, the chair represented a modern furnishing philosophy in the 1930s, which even today hasn’t lost its appeal.
