The relation of stage work and architecture

Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus school, saw in dramatic work an interplay of different disciplines forming a single “orchestral unit’’, like in architecture. It was from this structural relationship of two arts that he derived the necessity to set up a Bauhaus stage of his own to examine and reformulate the basic elements of stage design.

Triadic ballet and Bauhaus dances by Oskar Schlemmer

Oskar Schlemmer, who led the stage workshop in the years 1923-1929, was in the centre of the Bauhaus stage. With his triadic Ballet and the Bauhaus dances, he investigated the tension between man and space (and therefore also the fundamental conditions of theatrical composition) in an interplay of shape, colour, sound, movement and light.

The DVD Bauhaus Stage & Dance 1 deals intensively with Oskar Schlemmer: It presents him as a person and artist and shows his Bauhaus dances reconstructed by Margarete Hasting and Gerhard Bohner.

The DVD Stage & Dance 2 shows the stage experiments of the Bauhaus artists Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack, Wassily Kandinsky, Kurt Schmidt and Lothar Schreyer, including "Das mechanische Ballet” (The Mechanical Ballet) and "Bilder einer Ausstellung” (Pictures of an exhibition).

After being appointed to the Frankfurt city architect in 1925, Ernst May gathered a team of of young architects, planners and designers.. On account of its all-embracing ambitions modern interior design ambitions, but also rationalisation and cost reduction of construction by standardisation of floor layouts and component parts, the involvement of local companies and employment of the unemployed, DAS NEUE FRANKFURT distinguished itself as the most innovative large-scale 1920s project of the Neues Bauen movement.

Trailer of the DVD: Bauhaus Stage & Dance 1

In dramatic work Walter Gropius saw an interplay of different disciplines forming a single “orchestral unit’’, like in architecture. He derived the need to establish the Bauhaus stage from the structural relationship of both arts. Here, the elementary items of ”stage design” were meant to be examined and reformulated.
