The new Frankfurt
Director: Paul Wolff, Jonas Geist, Joachim Krausse Publisher: Bauhaus Dessau trust
After being appointed the Frankfurt city architect in 1925, Ernst May assembled a staff of young architects, planners and designers. On account of its all-embracing ambitions modern interior design ambitions, but also rationalisation and cost reduction of construction by standardisation of floor layouts and component parts, the involvement of local companies and employment of the unemployed, DAS NEUE FRANKFURT distinguished itself as the most innovative large-scale 1920s project of the Neues Bauen movement. In addition to the original films by Dr. Paul Wolff from the 1920s, the edition presents the detailed documentation by WDR, the German public TV channel. Architects, designers, kitchen manufacturers, as well as numerous first residents of the apartments in the settlements designed by May are interviewed as contemporary witnesses.
