Fritz Hansen

Furniture by Fritz Hansen is, of course, part of the world's leading architecture in its time. Since 1872, the company has been writing its success story, which was largely shaped by star designer Arne Jacobsen.

Skagerak as part of the Fritz Hansen family

Founded in Denmark in 1872, Fritz Hansen has a long history of collaborating with leading international designers whose visionary concepts - and the spaces they helped to transform - it brought to life. Fritz Hansen furniture - design that conquers the world

Fritz Hansen furniture has traditionally been created by great architects and designers and has naturally been part of leading architecture around the world in its time. It is a natural facet of the image of international companies and the identity of modern city dwellers. Founded in Denmark in 1872, the company has a long history of collaboration with leading international designers whose visionary concepts - and the spaces they helped to transform - it brought to life.

The story that has led to Fritz Hansen's standing is as unique as the furniture that makes up that story. It begins with a visionary master carpenter from the provinces, whose name today embodies a defining design philosophy. A philosophy that continues to inspire leading architects and designers around the world even after more than 140 years. Fritz Hansen came to Copenhagen in 1872, founded his first joinery and by 1885 had made a name for himself with his own range of furniture.

Generational change and growing internationality thanks to the takeover of the Danish family business Skagerak

At the turn of the century, the founder handed over the reins to his son Christian E. Hansen, who was able to rapidly expand the company's reputation with prestigious commissions (including for the Danish royal family). A commission for Copenhagen City Hall led to the first collaboration with an architect.

After the company switched to the industrial production of its furniture in the 20. century, it soon began to expand internationally when Christian Hansen's sons joined the company. Denmark's first steel furniture, for example, found recognition in New York, but not on the domestic market.

Fritz Hansen added outdoor furniture to its portfolio with the acquisition of Skagerak. Skagerak, a Danish family business with a focus on responsible design and production, perfectly complements Fritz Hansen's Nordic design traditions and quality standards.

Fritz Hansen design classics from the pen of Arne Jacobsen and other greats of the design world

From the 1930s onwards, the now legendary Arne Jacobsen worked for Fritz Hansen. However, his star did not shine until 1952, when he recognized the potential of the gluing techniques developed to perfection by the company founder's grandson Sören Hansen. It all began with the "Ant" , a chair that is still the best-selling chair in the company's history. Jacobsen later designed the egg chair and the swan chair for his own modernist masterpiece, the Royal Hotel in the heart of Copenhagen. Both chairs are now international and timeless style icons. His Oxford chair is the epitome of Fritz Hansen design and embodies originality, simplicity and lightness as well as sculptural qualities.

In collaboration with visionary designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm and Hans J. Wegner, Fritz Hansen has shaped the Danish design tradition. Fritz Hansen was founded to take account of the international orientation and the opening up to international designers and architects. The company is based on a design philosophy that is timeless and relevant over time, simple, original and sculptural.

The Danish-based lighting company Lightyears has been part of Fritz Hansen since 2015. In close collaboration with internationally recognized designers and architects, the manufacturer develops and produces high-quality, modern luminaires that combine tradition and innovation, continuing the proud tradition of exquisite craftsmanship, quality and timeless design.
