Under "Flowerpot" there are basically two different types of pots: the cachepot and the hydro pot. Cachepots are characterized by the fact that the excess water cannot escape. This is why you either need an additional under pot or you can create a drainage system in the pot itself to keep the excess water away from the roots.
A hydro pot, on the other hand, has its own water reservoir: a separate water container made of unglazed terracotta, into which the water is poured directly (2), allows the soil to be kept moist and the plant roots are permanently supplied with a small amount of water.
Another possibility is the water level indicator (3), which is visible at the same time: the water reservoir is made of glass, so you can see how much water is still in the pot. The water is also poured directly into the glass container, from where the plant draws the necessary water.
In addition to these two variants, there is also the option of an irrigation cone (1), which is suitable for every pot, or a model with a hole and saucer (4). In this way you can easily create your own irrigation system or prevent your plants from drying out and waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
"A flower pot with an integrated irrigation system is particularly practical when you are travelling and cannot water continuously for a long period of time. The water reservoir in the pot allows the plant to simply draw the required amount of water itself." - Viktoria, interior design expert
From standing over hanging up to mounted on the wall or in the Greenhouse style - there are many different types of plant pots. Especially trendy are pots with a frame. Planters can also come in a wide variety of shapes: While the cylindrical shape offers plenty of room for roots and also allows drainage to be placed at the bottom, flat pots with a large diameter are particularly suitable for plants with flat roots or bulbous plants. When considering how large the flower pot should be, it is advisable to always choose the cachepot slightly larger than the previous one, if possible, as this promotes plant growth. For plants that grow quickly, it is also helpful to take an even larger pot directly - in line with your expectations.
While you can use any type of flower pot indoors, there are several points to consider when using outdoor plant pots: For example, they must not only be weatherproof, but also ensure that excess water can escape through rain. In addition, the flower trough must have the appropriate stability to withstand wind and weather. Also make sure that the material, e.g. metal, does not additionally heat the soil or strengthen frost. Suitable outdoor planters and even more tips for this category can be found here.
With regard to the material of design plant pots the choice is very large and there are advantages and disadvantages:
With a ceramic flower box (6) you choose a durable and long-lasting, but also comparatively heavy pot. The most common materials are earthenware and terracotta, which are available glazed and raw, but heat up in strong sunlight. Concrete is similar to ceramic, but is characterised by its typical fine-pored appearance.
The same problem with solar radiation is present in metal flower pots. These planters (1) are made of aluminium or powder-coated steel but are light, durable and versatile in colour and shape.
In addition, when it comes to plastic, you have the choice between textile fabrics, such as polyester or polypropylene (4), or solid forms (3). These also have the advantage that they are light and can have many different designs. For outdoor use, however, they must be specially treated, as sunlight can otherwise make them brittle and fragile.
Plant pots made of glass are not only varied in shape and colour, but also look particularly noble and give the plant a special appearance. On the other hand they are quite heavy and break easily.
Wooden models (2) can be used both indoors and outdoors. However, it is important that they are coated on the inside, otherwise the wood will draw too much moisture and become dilapidated.
