Terence Conran

One of the most important English designers of the 20th century

Sir Terence Conran is one of the most popular English designers and restaurateurs of the 20th century. Among other subjects, he studied Textile Design at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Afterwards, he worked for various companies until he founded his brand Habitat in 1964. In the following decades Habitat grew to a chain of stores, which had a great success by selling household goods and furniture in a modern design. The company grew by founding other firms, including a furniture shop with furniture from FSC® certified wood. Today, he is Chairman of the Conran Group, among other thing including restaurants and hotels and the architectural company Conran & Partners that works on large-scale projects all over the world.

As a big fan of design, Terence founded the Design Museum in London, and was the Chairman of the Royal College of Art for some time. So far, he published over 50 books, in which he explains his understanding of design that he has implemented in numerous collections for renowned manufacturers. "People don't know what they want until you show them" is a quote from Conran, which he often likes to use. For some years now, the garden is the designer’s favourite place. It is therefore not surprising that, in recent years, the designs concentrate on garden furniture, which have a modern look with an English touch. In 1983, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
