The classic collection by Iittala grows with the Ultima Thule plate. The plate was presented in 2015 for Tapio Wirkkala's 100th anniversary.
The effort and time needed to perfect the glass processing technique is evident when looking at the Ultima Thule glass collection. The unique effect of the glasses and their appearance imitate nature: Tapio Wirkkala was inspired by melting glaciers in Lapland for this design. Hence the name Ultima Thule, the most northern landmark in the world.
The Ultima Thule collection is considered as a classic piece today. It definitely influenced the international success of Iittala. The outstanding Finnish talent for glass work is mirrored in the finely worked glass surface. The shapes of the plates by Iittala differ from piece to piece, depending on how liquid the glass was when it hit the wooden molds.
The plate wasn’t part of the Ultima Thule collection from the beginning, but it interacts with all the other pieces of the collection as if it always was.
