The idea of this extraordinary knife block appears to have come to the designer Jörg Gätjens when he was playing “spillikins“. The principle of this knife block is as simple as it is ingenious: two stainless steel springs hold 900 wooden skewers together, the knives are put into these bunched wooden skewers from above. There are no rules where or how to put your knives in, simply stick them in and they are protected and safely stored.
A plate made of high-quality plastic serves as the base, provides a secure stand and protects the surface from scratches.
The knife block, like the “up” tray from side by side is made in the Wendelstein Werkstätten (workshops) in Rosenheim, in which, for example people with learning difficulties have had jobs for over 25 years.
The knife block was designed by Jörg Gätjens for the side by side project and received the Form Prize in 2002.
