The idea that the couple embodied Klimt himself and his companion Emilie Flöge is conveyed in particular by the novel The Painted Kiss by Elizabeth Hickey, even though the author ultimately portrays the portrait as an allegory of love.
The painting is done with oil on canvas and is of considerable size at 180 × 180 centimeters. Its predominant material effect is that of gold paint. The original painting can be seen today in the gallery of the Belvedere Palace in Vienna.
