The Kay Bojesen monkey - between fantasy figure and design object
The wooden monkey from Kay Bojesen with its mischievous face and light-coloured belly has been transforming children's rooms into jungles and inspiring dreams since 1951. The excellent workmanship and the high-quality wood of the little monkey provide play fun for generations.
The wooden monkey is part of a collection of wooden animals that the designer Kay Bojesen created between 1935 and 1957.
On television, the Kay Bojesen monkey has served as a mascot on nature programs or has been a staple on quiz shows as a prize. In 2008, the design bible Wallpaper even made the cheeky little monkey the epitome of Danish Design. Together with the other wooden animals from Kay Bojesen , the wooden monkey places itself in the unique border area between fantasy figure and design object. Full of soul, humor, craftsmanship and with a mischievous eye - and thus an appeal to the playing child in all of us.
A wooden monkey with character
But not only in children's rooms, but also on shelves and in offices, the wooden animals from Kay Bojesen are now sought-after collector's items that are passed on from one generation to the next. That's why the animals are perfect as a gift idea - everywhere where people live and play: Baptism, birthday, confirmation, graduation, wedding, anniversary.
Throughout his life, Bojesen himself has paid homage to the mantra that good design should be human, warm and lively: "They should remind you of a circus" , he has usually described his works, of which the charming wooden figures are among the most popular.
Kay Bojesen is one of the very great Danish functionalists with his user-friendly and modern formal language. In his naive designs, form and object, seriousness and play merge into one. At the same time, Bojesen had the unique ability to bring wood to life, which has made his works international design icons.
