Carafe made of Glass
Ice-cold drinks in ice cold design: The decanter out of the classic Ultima Thule collection by Iittala presents drinks wonderfully. The Ultima Thule series was designed in 1968, whereas the glass carafe was launched in 2015 on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Tapio Wirkkala, the collection’s designer.
Ultima Thule Collection
Ultima Thule is a collection of glasses that unmistakably display how long and hard the work was, which is needed to perfect the glass processing technique. The unique effect and the look of the glasses imitate nature: Tapio Wirkkala was inspired by melting ice of glaciers in Lapland when he designed the glasses. That’s the reason for the name “Ultima Thule”, since that’s the name of the northernmost landmass on earth.
Today, Ultima Thule is considered a classic collection. The collection has highly influenced the international success of Iittala. The distinct power of Finnish glass processing is visible in the finely worked collection. The shapes of the carafes by Iittala differ from piece to piece, according to how the liquid glass encloses the wooden models during the production process.
