Maude Couchbed - white

The Zurich architect Michael Mettler came unexpected to his youngest child, the bed system "maude”. Commissioned by a friend with the planning of a double bed, he decided at first to lengthen the piece of furniture on both sides, to override the less attractive prportions of popular mattresses. So the piece of furniture gets harmonic aspect ratios of 2:3 and 3:4.

On the search of balanced measures more protagonists of the modern bed room experience consorted with the bed and became one in “maude”. So the bed frame on the head- and footend becomes as the design may be of a movable shelf board to a book sheldm night stand or storing place for all kinds of little things, which we like to have at the bed. Is the shelf board upright, you can place back cushions in a dent wherever you want them - for a breakfast at the bed also at the opposite side.

Uppermost bid in the construction and materialising by “maude” was abstinence and simplicity. The material choice meets coated casing plywood. The 2 centimetre strong wood plate with the unbreakable surface offers the slick game with the contrast of edge and area.

The material is used with millimetre accuracy in a Swiss joinery on CNC-machines. The stroong connections of the robust frame are grooved and glued. Thanks to the eccentric screw and shelf board bow the mounting occurs and the modfictaion of “maude” occurs fast and easy, only with help of a screwdriver and rubber mallet.
