The Vakka storage box by the designer couple Aalto + Aalto was inspired by the traditional plywood suitcases, which are very popular in the Baltic countries. An aesthetically appealing container, which does not look too much like a container was the result. The Vakka storage box with lid can be used for several purposes; it can even be used as a stackable piece of furniture or side table.
The Iittala company produces Vakka in the LK-Taivute in Finnish Lahti, where there is a long tradition of working with plywood. Plywood is the ideal material for Vakka, since it it is an original, soft material which wins you over with its natural beauty.
“Plywood is naturally beautiful – just as stones on a beach are. Nature gave it its shape and it becomes even more beautiful with age through dents, scars and unevenness”, say Klaus and Elina Aalto. Vakka was a natural challenge for the designer couple because they focussed on functionality. “We wanted to create something where form isn’t the dominant factor.
The form was to follow the concept of functionality. We try to create traditional practical and clever objects with their appearance determined by the functionality.”, according to both designers from the Aalto + Aalto studio. Vakka from littala is available in two sizes in a natural colour and white plywood edition.
