Stelton represents a very particular view of the world: "The Stelton state of mind" – a belief in surprising, innovative, functional, high-quality Scandinavian design.
Stelton was founded in 1960 with the aim of producing stainless steel tableware and serveware for the Danish market. As early as 1964, the then managing director Peter Holmblad established a very close collaboration with the Danish architect and designer Professor Arne Jacobsen. The idea was to design a series of stainless steel products whose individual items would form a harmonious whole. The result was Cylinda-Line, which was launched in 1967. Its balanced, functional design quickly made the product line well known and famous.
Cylinda-Line has been a great success since its launch – helped, no doubt, by the Danish Industrial Design Award in 1967 and the international design award of the American Institute of Interior Designers in 1968. Arne Jacobsen died in 1971, at the height of his international success. Cylinda-Line was later extended with a few pieces for which designs already existed. Cylinda-Line, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, consists of 34 products.
Stelton has worked with Erik Magnussen since 1975. The young designer and ceramicist was already known for his porcelain services for Bing & Grøndahl. In 1977, the stainless steel vacuum jug was introduced. With its distinctive rocker stopper, it remains Stelton's best-selling item to this day.
Stelton has received the Industrial Prize of the Danish Society of Industrial Design three times. Many Stelton products are now held in museums, for example the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, USA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum in London, UK, the Staatliches Museum für angewandte Kunst in Munich in Germany and the Kunstindustrimuseet in Copenhagen, Denmark.
At the beginning of 2004, Stelton's ownership changed, with director and majority shareholder Michael Ring now at the helm. A new goal was set to renew the company. Stelton has always stood for innovative and practical Scandinavian design of the highest quality – and intends to continue doing so. On this basis, product development was to be significantly stepped up over the following years, with new designers helping to lead the design icon into a new era.
