Preview: Vitra brings inclinable chair Tip Ton

Vitra and Barber Osgerby define a new chair typology with Tip Ton: the front inclinable plastic chair. Tip Ton raises cymbal and back when it is inclined to the front, improving the circulation of body and back muscles.

The chair was designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and will expectedly be available from September 2011 in eight different colours.

The name Tip Ton suggests the characteristic double seating experience – Tip Ton can be tilted to the front out of the normal position, where the chair stops inclined a few degrees to the front. The innovation behind this apparently simple action consists of the floor runners that rise 9 degrees to the front.

The inclined seating position which wasn’t used for mechanic office chairs yet, improves the circulation of body and back muscles setting cymbal and back upright. Thanks to its distinctive appearance, Tip Ton does suit tables, offices, restaurants as well as conference and meeting rooms or schools without any problems.

The ETH Zurich, one of the worldwide leading technical high schools, has researched the health supporting characteristics of an additionally inclined seating position in the year 2010. The results show that a reinforced muscles activity in the body and back areas is reached as the oxygen supply is improved – which is also a positive effect for the concentration.

Tip Ton makes these characteristics available in the shape of an affordable and robust plastic chair for the first time and it allows new places of action with it.

Tip Ton consists of polypropylene and is manufactured out of one single mold without mechanic components. This makes it extremely durable and recyclable by 100%. Up to four Tip Ton chairs can be stacked.
