The Finnish designer Alvar Aalto designed the bench 153A already creating it in the year 1945. The Artek Company produces the bench with its characteristic L-feet today, following the original design.
The 153A bench is the older brother from the 153B bench and fits in various different places and has a multiple usage because of the plain design and the birch wood it is made of. It is bright lacquered and also available in white or black paintwork.
An Alvar Aalto design characteristic is the typical form of a reversed L, this can be wonderfully seen at the bench 153. Aalvar Aalto equipped stools, bar-stools and chairs with this leg form creating a modular system with this that became well-known as L-System. This system incarnates Alvas Aalto’s standard and systematic ideals, which make his furniture this much versatile applicable and easily integratable.
The manufacturer Artek suggests a wet cloth for cleaning the wooden products. Also soapy water can be used if needed. In the end the bench should be rubbed as dry as possible with a dry tissue. Black traces at its feet can rubbed away with an ordinary eraser. Also in our blog:
