Vitra - Panton Chair series

Vitra - Panton Chair Collection - Banner

The Panton Chair is an icon of design of the last century. It is the most consequent expression of a design conception, which wants to realise an object in only one material and a floating shape.

The Danish designer Verner Panton worked many years with the idea of realizing a plastic chair out of one cast. Together with Vitra the first prototypes have been created in the 60s, from 1967 the Panton Chair has been produced in series. Since its import, the Panton Chair ran through many production phases.

At the end of the 90s the last authorised version of the chair was created in cooperation with Verner Panton. With this model, he could reach one of his first goals for the very first time: the plastic chair as affordable industry product.

The production of the Panton Chair

The Panton Chair is manufactured using the modern injection molding process. In this process, the basic material, a granulate at 230°C, is injected into a mold. Weighing 10 tons, the machine presses the chair into shape, giving it its iconic design. After cooling, the front part of the mold is removed and the Panton Chair chair is almost finished. Now the edges are finished and other finishing touches are made - and there's one more design piece in the world.
